Nvidia Cancels RTX 4080 12GB Graphics Card After Criticism

In September of this year, Nvidia announced three new graphics cards from the Lovelace generation. The first one, the RTX 4090, is already out and works really well. The price increase here was not too big and was well received by the buyers themselves, sold out relatively quickly. However, the situation was worse with the RTX 4080, which was supposed to be available in two variants: 12 GB and 16 GB.

The problem was that the difference between them is not only in the size of VRAM, but also in the chip itself, and hence in all other parameters. The 12GB version was supposed to be about 30% slower than the 16GB RTX 4080. On the Internet, criticism of the name of this map immediately began and demanded a change. However, few suspected that this would actually happen.

Nvidia announced Friday night that while the RTX 4080 16GB will be released as planned on November 16th, the 12GB version has been cancelled.

The RTX 4080 12GB is a fantastic graphics card, but it’s misnamed. Having two 4080 branded GPUs is confusing. That’s why we’re hitting the Giveaway button on the RTX 4080 12GB.” This is stated in the message on the official website.

It is not yet clear what the company will do with already released products. A simple rebranding to RTX 4070 and possibly a price cut would be suggested, but perhaps that would be too embarrassing for Nvidia and they prefer to throw the card in the trash.
