The first thing you need to know about Terra Invicta, the ambitious space strategy game from the creators of The Long War mod for XCOM, is that it’s huge. It’s probably more than you think. After a delay announced last year, Terra Invicta launches today on Steam and GOG Early Access, enough for two full games.
Terra Invicta is a massive strategy game where you play as a faction that arose in response to humanity’s first contact with aliens. They have arrived, they have a plan and you must fight back. This isn’t an XCOM game though – in the opening hours of the campaign, you’ll be playing a game that more closely resembles Paradox’s range of strategy games, dispatching multiple agents around the world to rally support for your faction. , keep an eye out for other agents, and research new technologies that will help you resist (or accept) an alien invasion.
Much is already happening on this level. The earth is modeled in amazing detail, from the levels of political instability in each country to the amount of anthropogenic climate change occurring at any given time. However, Terra Invicta also includes an extremely detailed space combat simulation.
Not only will you manage the politics and logistics of a faction on Earth looking to industrialize near space, but you’ll also design, deploy, and command a fleet of space battleships and residential stations. Once in space, you will have to explore a world of naval tactics and Newtonian physics, as well as enemy residences to infiltrate and capture.
That’s a lot, so be careful if you’re new to global strategy games. If you’re up for a challenge that will leave you chomping at the bit for dozens of hours, Terra Invicta might be just what you’ve been waiting for. You can find it on Steam and GOG if you’re ready to dive in.
