PSVR 2 will not support games from the first generation of Sony headsets

While we still don’t know a release date, it’s clear that the PSVR 2 virtual reality headset is coming. Sony already boasts a good lineup of games that will get a VR version, like Resident Evil Village, as well as brand new titles, with the Horizon Call of the Mountain exclusive being the main attraction. But many gamers have also been looking forward to playing the games originally made for the first generation of this VR headset. Confirming backward compatibility seemed more like a formality, but in the end it was completely different. A Sony representative confirmed on the official PlayStation podcast that PSVR 2 will not support games from the original PSVR.

“PSVR 2 has much more advanced features such as brand new controllers with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.” Hideaki Nishino says Game development on PSVR 2 is different, he said, but it’s what makes it possible for developers to take full advantage of the next generation.

Either way, it’s a bit of a weird explanation, and fans aren’t happy with this decision. It remains to be seen whether Sony will reconsider the situation or whether there will be any support from developers who could make a port for the new device.
