CD Projekt Red outlines The Witcher 4, other expansions to the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, and a possible sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 as the RPG developer and GOG owner posts questions about its latest earnings announcement.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty was recently confirmed as the first and only DLC expansion for the CDPR sandbox RPG, although the developer says it plans to expand the game’s universe beyond the DLC packs, hinting at other projects such as the anime of Netflix Edgerunner and a possible cyberpunk sequel.
“We decided to build a big expansion,” says Michal Nowakowski, CDPR’s vice president of business development. “That said, we are fully committed to the development of Cyberpunk IP beyond this CP extension. We’ve put a lot of time and effort into building this franchise, and we really want to build on what’s available right now: new stories, new experiences, new content, and not just in the video game format. . In terms of expansions, there will only be one big expansion; however, there will be new things.
With specific regard to “further development of Cyberpunk IP” and “new stories, new experiences, new content”, CDPR seems to suggest that there could be new games in the Cyberpunk universe in development, potentially a full sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. In fact, Nowakowski’s comment about expanding the franchise “not just in video game format” could mean that if other parallel Cyberpunk content is planned, such as a Netflix series, other video game projects are being considered.
More reliable information is offered about a potential The Witcher 4 and an entirely new trilogy of Witcher games that are apparently being developed using the Unreal Engine.
“We are in pre-production, this is the first phase of development,” explains Adam Kichinsk, president and co-CEO of CDPR. “We are where we need to be and the game is developing in the EU. Of course, we are preparing the first game now, but we have more than one game in mind. Our first saga consisted of three games… we are currently working on the first game of the second Witcher saga.
CDPR also recently released the official Cyberpunk 2077 modding tools and plans to release The Witcher 3 next-gen update for PC later this year. Kicinsk confirmed in a September 8 CDPR post that “we are on track to release the game in Q4,” meaning it should launch before the end of 2022. With new Cyberpunk and The Witcher projects apparently in the works, It seems that CD Projekt El Rojo has a lot of work to do.
