Callisto Protocol Gamescom is back to show off on the occasion of 2022, and various details about the game’s features have been released by Chief Technical Officer Mark James, who reports on how the title supports the game. ray tracing and includes some Elements of Unreal Engine 5apparently.
“It was important for us to achieve a physical consistency. lights and shadows In the game “James revealed”, oppositions and congestion are important to a horror. Using our corridor-based staircase of up to 20 meters, we realized that around 8 light sources can affect the surfaces of the space.”
Ray tracing is useful to achieve these results, but it seems that Unreal Engine 4 can’t handle such complexity in terms of lighting system.
“Unfortunately, we realized that the UE4 is limited to only 4 light sources that can cast shadows, so we first tried to modify the engine to be able to add more sources at a lower cost in terms of performance.”
The Striking Distance team therefore came up with a solution with hybrid ray-traced shadows. As we continue to progress in development, the developers have also collaborated with Epic Games to introduce some of the game’s features, as Unreal Engine 5 is already revealed in a more complete form. new graphics engine Under the Callisto Protocol, which effectively introduces some of the technical elements found in Unreal Engine 5, leading to intermediate solutions between one generation and the next.
In particular, some of the reflections and management of lights is linked to ray tracing and more advanced features of the Epic Games graphics engine. For the rest, we’ve seen Glen Schofield’s acknowledgment of using crunch in development over the past few hours and the fact that the game will be supported with DLC for a year after launch.
