Roblox malware is behind 9.6% of all gaming-related cyber threats, based on the number of associated malicious or unwanted files, according to a report by cyber threat firm Kaspersky SecureList that reviewed the industry’s sandbox games. platform and various other sources. The platform is just behind Minecraft and FIFA, which are responsible for 25.2% and 11.7% of these threats, respectively.

The study analyzed threats and statistics related to cryptocurrency miner attacks, threats posing as game cheats, and data thieves. Kaspersky Lab then compiled a list of the 28 most popular game series that were or will be available on Steam and Origin, as well as platform-independent tiles, to determine which one poses the most serious threat. In addition to Roblox, the list includes Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto, Need for Speed, Call of Duty, FIFA, CS:GO, and PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds (PUBG).

The security firm found that between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022, Minecraft, Roblox, Need for Speed, Grand Theft Auto, and Call of Duty were used as bait for cybersecurity threats such as PC bait. The most popular mobile games of the same period were Minecraft, Roblox, Grand Theft Auto, PUBG, and FIFA.

During this period, the organization verified 91,984 files containing malware and potentially unwanted applications that were distributed using popular game names as bait, affecting 384,224 users. It ranked Roblox as the third most prevalent threat vector in terms of the number of associated malicious or unwanted files (8,903) and second in terms of the number of affected users (38,838), behind Minecraft (131,005).

Kaspersky Lab’s analysis notes that multiplayer gaming platforms can pose an even greater threat than other games, citing Minecraft and Roblox in particular as examples.

“What is worrying is that the main target audience for these games is children and teenagers, who have significantly lower cybersecurity awareness due to lack of experience,” the report said. “Therefore, we assume that they can become easy prey for cybercriminals, so we must pay special attention to educating children on cybersecurity hygiene.”

The company also notes that malware and potentially unwanted programs distributed as cheats pose a significant threat, especially to gamers interested in the popular game series.

“Le plus souvent, les joueurs reçoivent des logiciels malveillants que volent la vie privée sur leurs appareils lorsqu’ils essaient de télécharger un jeu populaire à de un site de troisième niveau au lieu de l’acheter sur le site officiel”, indicate the message.

These are often “cracked” software versions of popular games, that is, games that people try to illegally download and play for free instead of paying full retail price. However, people often mistakenly download malicious versions of games simply by following deceptive links to websites that pose as legitimate content.

Kaspersky Lab offers some tips for gamers to protect themselves against malware, hacker attacks, and phishing. These include enabling two-factor authentication for all accounts, using strong and unique passwords, and double checking download URLs to make sure they are genuine. Kaspersky also recommends avoiding pirated software and other illegal content, such as cheats.
