Dredge is an idyllic spearfishing horror game.

Team17 and New Zealand developer Black Salt Games have released a trailer showcasing their new single-player fishing adventure game Dredge. Peaceful Sea Simulator is about an unlucky fisherman who regains control of his life and ventures out to sea to find his happiness the only way he knows how: fishing. All is not as it seems, however, as the trailer quickly shows off some elements of the horror game, showing off the sinister side of the game with the dangers lurking below the surface.

The basic gameplay cycle, at first glance at least, seems familiar: Venture into the unknown, collect as much loot as you can (in this case, fish), and return for profit. The difference here is that the cutesy aesthetic is at odds with the fact that something weird is going on. Shark-infested waters are a daily problem for anglers, but the Kraken? It wasn’t in the brochure.

In this version of Team17, players begin their adventures on a group of islands called The Dead, and you’ll be tasked with exploring the area, meeting the locals, and catching as many varieties of fish as possible. govern. Your ship can be upgraded to go farther, faster and deeper, so eventually no view touching the ocean will be impeded.

The description of Team17’s press release contains a not-so-hidden message: “Don’t look him in the eye.” Confused. Combined with 180 shades ranging from glorious sunsets to terrifying angler fish in the promo trailer, it makes us wonder if we’ve been sold our peaceful life at sea.

The sinister fishing game will be available on Steam sometime in 2023, with demos at Gamescom and other events throughout the year. I can wait to set sail and completely ignore the horrors below because I’m such a weakling. For more indie creativity, check out Coral Island and other Humble Games games available on Game Pass!
