Players have been waiting for the Guild Wars 2 End of Dragons DLC ever since the expansion was released. As ArenaNet prepares the next chapter of one of the best MMORPGs, the game director of the series has revealed that something is up, and we may recognize it.
As we said in our Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons review, the future for ArenaNet’s classic MMORPG looks bright. The current story is complete, the Steam release is fast approaching, and Guild Wars 2 celebrates its 10th anniversary in style.
After the success of EoD, the fourth expansion is now ready and everyone is waiting to see what the future holds. As we step into the past with the re-release of the first season of Living World and close out a decade of history, the launch on Steam represents something new not only for players, but also for the developer itself.
Game director Josh Davis spoke to PCGamesN about what the future of Guild Wars 2 looks like, and spoiler alert, it includes a lot more jade.
When I asked the main question (why release on Steam now?), Davis said that “time it feels Properly. Our latest expansion, End of Dragons, released in February, ended the story we’ve been telling for 10 years.”
He also notes that “you only get one chance to make a first impression,” which seems a bit odd given the game’s lifespan. “With 10 years of improvements and innovations, the game became what it is today. This is the best Guild Wars 2 game and I hope
that players new to the game on Steam find it worth the wait.”
However, the developers are excited about what the future holds for Tyria. “For the first time in the history of the game, we are able to take the story in a whole new direction. It’s incredibly liberating. We are preparing for a new adventure, on Tyria and as a development team, and now seems like the perfect time to bring new friends with us.”
“In the near future, the next episode of Living World Season 1 will air on September 13, with the finale before the end of the year,” says Davis.
“Shortly after, players can return to the Kantana continent, which was reintroduced in The End of Dragons, to solve the mystery and explore Kantana’s new location (ie, new to Guild Wars 2…). We’re working on World vs. World game mode updates, skill balance updates, and Halloween is just around the corner.”
This little segment in parentheses is really sinister. After all, Kanta did appear in Guild Wars: Factions, so we get to explore new but familiar places.
“We have also started working on our fourth expansion, although we are not yet ready to reveal any information about it. There are so many more stories and places to explore in Guild Wars 2!”
