Impressions of playing The Last Oric

The Czech RPG The Last Oricru was known for several years under the name Lost Hero, and the goal of this original version of the game was to offer “the first Czech game for souls”, which in itself was a very promising proposition. But with the acquisition of a global publisher and the name change, there have been some pretty fundamental changes to the game itself, which now relies much more on a non-linear story, mixing elements of fantasy and sci-fi and responding very consistently to player choices. First of all, in the direction of which of the two (three) sides of the military conflict he will join.

In this alien world, where you have to become one of the crew members of a (crashed?) spaceship, humanoids and “rats” are waging an irreconcilable war with each other. Although the choice of side may seem relatively simple at first glance, in reality it turns out that the humanoids are perhaps too racist, who simply refuse to leave the Rats alone. At the same time, however, there is a mysterious third party in the game who is quite possibly pulling the strings of the entire conflict. You, as a player, will have the option to join any of these three sides, and although you will be playing through the same locations, their context, objectives, and story development will be markedly different.

As a player, you will have the option to join any of the three sides of the conflict.

During my roughly two-hour game session, story cutscenes and interactive dialogue sequences really took over the majority. But when it comes to actually exploring the game world and especially the combat, it’s still true that at the heart of this game is the first serious attempt at a modern Czech soul game that offers all the mechanics and rules you could want. expect from such a game (including the ability to profile your character as a tank, a more nimble so-called nimble build, or a cautious mage-operator). However, in order for every player to enjoy the mainstay of the game in the form of a story, you will be offered not only two difficulties (one of which is clearly “story”), but also the opportunity to play through the entire game in split-screen co-op (although story progress is saved host only, similar to Souls games).

After two hours of play, I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised by how a relatively small new Czech team was able to build an epic and ambitious game. Of course, you can’t expect the setting or mechanical treatment of the kings of the genre, but this game will probably hold up against the popular German AA RPGs, for example. Add to this the high replay value thanks to the non-linear plot and Czech subtitles, and suddenly you have a really interesting work in front of you.

The build I tested in co-op with one of the developers on a relatively powerful PC had, in addition to the small unfinished tasks that are typical for the game at this stage of development, there were also certain problems with optimizing the flow during fights, but the developers assured me that this was unexpected the problem of a specific station on which we tested the game and where it worked much better the day before.

In any case, the beginning of the story and, among other things, a kind of sarcastic humor (for example, mechanics like the rebirth of your hero after death are heavily commented on here by you and other characters in the story) interested me so much that I really began to look forward to the final game. Luckily, it looks like we won’t have to wait long, as the release is already scheduled in two months.

The game will release on October 13, 2022 for PS5, XSX|S and PC, but in the meantime, you can add it to your wishlist on Steam.
