The Asobi team is working on their biggest project yet

Sony’s oldest studio, known as Japan Studio, was dissolved last year, but part of it survived. We’re talking about the Asobi team, which has the popular Astro Bot Rescue Mission games and the latest Astro’s Playroom game pre-installed on the PlayStation 5, which showcases the capabilities of the console and its DualSense controller. Now the studio is already working on another project, which we learned a little more about thanks to an article in Games Industry magazine.

In an interview, studio head Nicolas Doucet mentioned, for example, that the team is constantly growing. When it was still part of Japan Studio, it had about 35 employees, now there are more than 60, and Doucet plans to reach 100 people. At that size, the studio wouldn’t have to focus on just one project.

The current one is already in full production and should be the biggest game to date, which should be completely complete and not just a “tech demo”. However, it should retain some aspects of the previous games, especially the hardware experimentation. We can certainly look forward to interesting uses for the DualSens.

The Asobi team is generally close to Sony’s hardware team. For example, they were among the first to try DualSense. But despite being a Japanese team, Doucet says they are aiming for a global audience, which is reflected in the studio as well. Although 75% of the employees are from Japan, communication takes place in both Japanese and English, and everyone on Team Asobi needs to know both languages.

It was the global focus that probably saved Team Asobi, because one of the main reasons for the dissolution of Japan Studio was probably too much concentration in the Japanese market, which is no longer so attractive to Sony.
