Microsoft admits Xbox One sales were less than half of PS4 sales

While Sony regularly boasted about PS4 console sales until recently, Microsoft stopped publishing Xbox One numbers in 2016. We didn’t have an official comparison and everything was based on ratings. This has now changed, but the origin of the message may surprise you. This is taken from court documents in Brazil, where Microsoft is defending its acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

The Redmond giant mentions in one of the documents that “Sony has surpassed Microsoft in console sales, selling more than twice as much as the last generation Xbox.” Game Luster magazine reported on this interesting find. By comparison, PS4 sales have officially stopped at 117.2 million (May figures and also the latest we got), so the Xbox One could be somewhere in the region of 55 million. The popular Nintendo Switch hybrid console hit 111.08 million. and slowly but surely catches up with the aforementioned PlayStation 4.

However, it should be added that things are not so bad for Microsoft in this generation. While the number of PlayStation 5s has surpassed 20 million, the number of Xbox Series X|S consoles is estimated to be around 15 million. The situation on a local scale is also important because, for example, in Japan, where the PlayStation always wins by an overwhelming advantage, Microsoft has already sold more than twice as many Xbox Ones sold over the entire period.
