Starfield’s promise of 1,000 planets both excited and discouraged me. Of course, not all of them will be filled with NPCs and environmental stories – some will likely be balls of floating resources that you can mine. However, it’s clear that Bethesda is getting bigger than ever, and I’ve been a little worried lately that things are getting too spread out or getting too bloated.
After a serious post-Starfield crash, I returned to an old friend who was patiently waiting for me to return to Xbox Game to calm my nerves and get me in the mood for some space RPG action. Hello again, Outer Worlds.
Many people have already made the connection between Bethesda’s upcoming space RPG and Obsidian’s. But revisiting The Outer Worlds for a second game on Game Pass (about a year after my first) taught me a valuable lesson as a future Starfield fan: don’t worry.
Let me explain. A few days after Todd Howard’s “1,000 Planets” sequence, my enthusiasm for Starfield was out of control. But all excitement has to end, and mine ended in some kind of internal crisis over whether this game would make it to our best Xbox RPG list and whether I’d be upset after waiting so long. . It was a feeling that I struggled to overcome.
But thanks to The Outer Worlds, I’m out now. If Starfield fails, I realize I have more than enough backup plan. Obsidian has done such a good job with their interstellar RPG that I’m pretty sure I have three or four Outer World games left to fill a potential Starfield-sized void (plus there’s DLC I don’t have). haven’t added yet). Conversely, if Bethesda succeeds and certainly succeeds in creating a story, factions, and characters half as engaging as The Outer Worlds, then I have plenty of RPG content to enjoy. It’s a win-win.
I went back to The Outer Worlds to see if it could ignite Starfield joy in my cold, sarcastic heart, traumatized by countless game delays. To some extent though, it really reassured me.
What if Starfield promised too much and delivered too little? I would love to have a GOTY contestant right away, but otherwise who cares? The important thing is that The Outer Worlds is still available if I want a fun space adventure.

Will I keep scouring the internet for a Starfield story? Reliable. Once announced, will I scribble the Starfield release date on my calendar in large print? Absolute. But now, I can at least experience these excitements without feeling the slightest fear.
