Nanoleaf Ultra Black Shapes Review – RGB Majesty Limited Edition

Nano-sheet shapes are great decorations that you can customize, but it’s hard not to notice how much they look like wasted light when RGB isn’t lighting up the room. I never thought I would criticize this particular aspect of them as they are just that, but Ultrablack nanosheet shapes setting a new standard for how tapestries look when the lights go out.

Aside from the obvious color differences, which I’ll cover later, the Ultra Black Shapes differ from their standard white counterparts in that they are a limited edition celebrating Nanoleaf’s 10th anniversary. In fact, they’re so limited that it looks like they’re already out of stock in the US, and stocks in other regions are running low at the time of this writing, so you’ll have to hurry to get a set if you offend. you. . . interest. However, we are offering a lifeline to US residents with a Smarter Kit giveaway, so stay tuned.

As a result, it may not surprise you that the selection is also quite…well…limited compared to other members of the Shapes family. You can only get the Ultra Black model in triangles, so you won’t find hexagons or mini-triangles here. You’ll also only be able to buy them as a nine-panel starter pack for $219.99/£199.99 or an optional three-panel expansion pack for $69.99/£69.99, which is slightly more expensive than their white counterparts. It’s up to you if you think the premium is worth it, but I have to say I fully support Ultra Black Shapes.

Ultra Black Nanoleaf Shape Design

Aside from their new look, the Ultra Black Shapes are nearly identical to the original triangles, from their 100mm height and 115mm width to the way each panel connects to one another. The shapes aren’t the only ones getting a new paint job, as the mounting plates, controller, and cable are jet black. I admire Nanoleaf’s dedication to making it feel like a complete kit, but it means the yarn stands out much more against lighter walls and ceilings. However, it’s impossible to please everyone in terms of decor options, and you can buy a white power supply separately if that bothers you too much.

In fact, I can confirm that all of the above uniforms and their accessories work with the Ultra Black model. I find it difficult to understand how white panels will go well with the elegance of these darker counterparts. Trust me, I’ve tried a few combinations, but you can mix and match to your heart’s content if you’re a little more creative than yourself. .

The signs are incredibly easy to install with the included adhesive strips, but first you’ll need to plan out the pattern you’ll use. The best way is to use a tape measure and place the triangles directly in front of you, but Nanoleaf has a layout wizard if you’re short on space. It’s not the friendliest of wizards as it’s in beta and doesn’t have the nine-panel option or the ability to rotate, but it was a lot easier to find a layout I liked.

After its installation, you need to remove the fabric and some spray. The matte black finish is a fingerprint magnet that, unlike the white version, shows off all the dirt. Not a big deal for me as I let them sit nicely on the wall and mostly use the RGB lighting control app, but it can be a problem if your finger slips while using the physical controller or you want to use the sensitive touch. function.

The original Nanoleaf shapes are some of the brightest RGB LEDs I’ve ever used, but white naturally reflects light better. At first I was worried that the Ultra Black model wouldn’t be able to compete with its predecessor, but surprisingly, they look just as good, both with the lights on and off. Although it is a bit darker, it makes up for it with richer contrast and deeper saturation. Full brightness is still too much when you factor them in for a better webcam, so that’s good enough for me.

There are several ways to use RGB lighting. First, there is an integrated controller that can be plugged into the side of the panels. That’s fine, but you can’t customize your scenes with it and it requires you to get up from your gaming chair. Additionally, there are desktop apps for Windows and Mac and mobile apps for Android and iOS.

Using the Android app is probably the easiest thing to set up, but I’m only speaking very roughly. Capturing a QR code with your smartphone camera is more convenient and then connects to your mobile internet connection, but the app is clunky and crashes or freezes on the loading screen several times before resigning itself to signing in. This has happened to me multiple times when setting up Shapes in different homes and on different routers. Unfortunately, you may only need to turn on the device.

Once the Nanoleaf Ultra Black Forms is connected to your Wi-Fi, you are ready to go and can even use the desktop app without further steps. There’s a bit of a learning curve when setting up scenes, choosing to animate colors, make panels react to music, or mirror what’s happening on your gaming monitor or TV, but you can save presets so you don’t have to go through the hassle every time you turn them on. Android and Windows apps are particularly slow at initial device recognition, but once you’ve had your morning coffee, you can instantly switch profiles without a hitch.

The final feature to note is that each panel is touch sensitive and flashes when pressed. If you play around with the settings long enough, you can probably pull off the mole game. Once the wow effect of its first use wears off, it seems a bit useless to me, but I think it’s better to have it and not want it than to want it and not have it.

Verdict

Claims aside, the Nanoleaf Ultra Black Shapes are some of the best RGB wall lights you can buy right now, even if it’s a hefty investment. Overall, I’m a big fan of how Nanoleaf is more aware than ever of what light looks like when it’s off, and I hope to see more along the same lines as these (and Nanoleaf’s wooden elements) in the future. In a nutshell, it is a work of art that many people will discuss, be it a visitor or one of the video call participants.

Some may love the exclusivity and pride of owning a kit when it’s not available, but hopefully Nanoleaf will list them again at some point in the future. It would be a shame if people missed out just because they couldn’t afford it during the short celebration period.

In the meantime, we’re giving US residents one last chance to get the Smarter Kit in our Nanoleaf Ultra Black Shapes giveaway. It’s also open to those in the UK and will only be available until August 19, so get involved while you can!

One of the best RGB wall decor money can buy and it looks great whether the lights are on or off as long as you buy it before the exclusivity period ends.
