STALKER 2 has cats, unfortunately

It’s always nice to see a cat in a video game. Or it was, anyway. There are cats in the upcoming STALKER 2 PC game that might just convince us to rethink our stance as cat supporters. The concept art of the cats that will appear in STALKER 2 shows something as unattractive as you can imagine, and the details included by GSC Game World are downright chilling.

The cat in STALKER 2, known as Bayun, is a gaunt feline with a tangle of fur running down its back and ending at the base of a wiry, bony tail. His skin feels paper thin and is torn in several places on his ribs, joints, and face. Large red growths protrude from the skin of the neck.

“A very reserved and agile mutant”, the description says. “For many years the stories about him were considered mere fables. Bayun gets its name from the pouches in its throat that allow the beast to mimic all kinds of sounds, including human speech.”

Namely Sinister.

Technically, this isn’t the first time mutant cats have been featured in a STALKER game. The STALKER fandom wiki states that mutant cats were present in the game code for STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl and STALKER: Clear Sky, but were clearly cut from both games, as they do not appear anywhere in the world except for one. which is stuffed and installed in Clear Sky’s Zoo Inquisitor.

However, you can sometimes hear their cries as they sit by the fire in the area.

STALKER 2 was supposed to be released in December, but that date was pushed back due to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. The developers say they are still working on the game, but have yet to announce a new release date.
