A new FFXIV fan video pays tribute to one of the most iconic and beloved memes from Square Enix’s MMORPG Lord of the Rings after the meme’s creator passed away in March. If you’ve been online in the mid-2000s, you’re no doubt familiar with Erwin “Tron” Beckveld’s earworm in Tolkien’s ‘They Lead the Hobbits to Isengard’, first uploaded as a video to the website by Albino Blacksheep. in August 2005.
The original video is a remix of several scenes from the second Lord of the Rings movie, The Two Towers, into an incredibly catchy dance anthem. As the title suggests, Orlando Bloom’s character Legolas is at the center of the plot, yelling, “The hobbits are being led to Isengard!” The two-minute video gained immense popularity online, to the point where LOTR director Peter Jackson uploaded the video to his Facebook page, featuring Bloom singing the song.
Now, the creators of FFXIV Plam & Switch have created a version of Final Fantasy XIV based on the video, reimagining it as “They’re taking the lalas to Harlemald.” The video is a complete reimagining of the song and its video, made into a multiplayer game. As you may have guessed, the Hobbits have been replaced by diminutive Lalafel and Isengard by the Imperial House of Harlemald. You can watch it on his YouTube channel or below, but note that the footage includes clips from the climax of A Realm Reborn’s main campaign, as well as cuts from Endwalker.
Sadly, in March 2022, it was reported that the meme’s original creator, Bickveld, passed away at the age of 52 after battling lung cancer. Along with his most famous work, he also created many remixes of classic Commodore 64 tracks, so it’s good to see his legacy continuing to delight netizens seventeen years later.
Here’s the full video (again, light placement and character spoiler warnings):
Elsewhere in Eorzea, Live Letter 72 is slated for August 12, and we’re expecting plenty of details on the fantasy game’s upcoming 6.2 update, and perhaps an early release of the FFXIV Island Sanctuary feature that turns an MMO into a fantasy game. farming. . If you want to get your hands on rare mounts and minions in the meantime, the FFXIV Moonfire Faire 2022 event will continue until the next expansion.
