Leveling up in World of Warcraft is very similar to Marmite. Some like to max out dozens of alts in quick succession, others do it once a series and hate every second of it. This may be good news for both sides: the latest expansion, Dragonflight, should reduce the total amount of experience needed to reach level 60 by around 50%, at least according to figures from Wowhead.com learned from the latest update. . . Alpha version (full stats can be found here). People who like to level up can double alt up to max level, and people who hate it won’t have to fight.
For some levels, the requirements have been increased, especially for levels 10-31. Between ages 10 and 20, experience requirements increased by an average of 4% and between ages 20 and 31, by an average of 13%. However, it is a drop in the ocean. 32-40 decreased by an average of 24%; 41-50 at an average of 60%; and 51-60 with a staggering 74% average. In pure terms, going from 1 to 60 will require 2.1 million XP, compared to the 4.85 million required in Shadowlands. On top of all that, Chromie Time, the system that allows players to level up any expansion they want, will no longer have an 89% XP penalty for levels 51-60. This makes sense, as the debuff currently exists as a way to encourage players to upgrade their alternate abilities in Shadowlands areas. Once Dragonflight is introduced, the level cap will be raised to 70, and Chromie’s time penalty will likely apply at levels 61-70.
Of course, we still don’t know everything about how the new numbers will add up. Previous expansions reduced experience requirements and also reduced experience quests and enemy mobs. That said, this won’t be the first time WoW has sped up the leveling process. In Cataclysm, Wrath of the Lich King, and Battle for Azeroth, upgrade requirements have been reduced by approximately 25-33%. If this XP drop is done as instructed, it will be the biggest XP drop in WoW’s long history.
