Like any game in the world today, World of Warcraft can’t afford to be loose when it comes to Twitch and social media. The venerable MMORPG has its own Twitch channel, which broadcasts major news and sporting events from time to time. In a few weeks, the channel will introduce something a little more unusual: the WoW Variety Show, a three-event live stream that kicks off August 24. Information about the event can be found on the Blizzard Blog, and more details will be posted. Twitter in the coming weeks, but for now let’s go over the main details.
As part of the Variety Show Triathlon, four celebrity captains and their teams of four registered community members will compete in a series of special events. Registration is open to all, but places are limited and only a select few from North America can compete. Registration will begin at 11:00am PT (2:00pm EST / 7:00pm BST) on August 15.. There will be a variety of prizes up for grabs during the stream, including game time, mounts, pets, and more. It’s not yet clear if these prizes will only be available to those who compete, or if chat viewers will also get a chance, but time will tell. We still don’t know who the famous captains will be, but as the event gets closer we will certainly know.
The first test will be a refresher competition. The famous four competitors will have one hour to climb the new character as high as possible while facing additional challenges along the way. This event will take place on live servers, so expect a lot of chaos and interference from outsiders.
The second event will be the Treasure Hunt, where teams of five will work together to solve a series of puzzles, brain teasers, and find items. Teams will compete not only against time, but against each other, and will have to carefully coordinate their actions to complete as many garbage collection tasks as possible.
The final event will be Footrace Through Azeroth, a test of planning and speed. Players will be assigned a target location and must race to reach it before anyone else, with access to flying mounts and flight paths strictly prohibited, only ground mounts and legs (or hooves). This final event is open to other players, so it’s worth registering.
