Somehow, one of the best Star Wars games on PC is back. The developer behind last year’s System Shock remake and Quake remaster seems to be teasing a Star Wars: Dark Forces remaster, and it’s not the first time it’s been done.
A long time ago, LucasArts created the fantastic Star Wars Dark Forces shooter, which is still one of the best first-person shooters and leads into the excellent Jedi Knight series. It’s certainly worth remastering, and Nightdive Studios, which has made similar updates for Quake, Blood, Turok, and more, seems like the best bet for it.
Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick has previously said that he would like his studio to take over a Dark Forces remaster. More recently, he replied to a tweet features 25 classic shooters with a mention of how Nightdive remastered four of them and “more on the way.” Some people have speculated that Kick was referring to Quake II (and possibly still), but the list also included Star Wars: Dark Forces.
After this Nightdive CEO another tweet displays a screenshot of a Dark Forces game on a TV with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The finish the game the. 1995’s Dark Forces definitely needs a modern remaster and reissue, especially with its obvious influence on Rogue One and The Mandalorian.
While these potential teasers are by no means confirmation of a Dark Forces relaunch, it did something similar before you knew it. We’ll have to wait and see, but we can probably expect the Quake II update to be announced first, with Quakecon taking place on August 18. You know if it happens.
That would be welcome news for fans of classic Star Wars games, as the Knights of the Old Republic remake has just been delayed indefinitely.
