WoW Wrath of the Lich King Classic (or WoTLK) has been circulating in beta for a while, but now that Blizzard has set a September release date, we reflect on our incredible in-depth dive into one of the world’s greatest games. . always extensions.
My World of Warcraft adventure began with Shadowlands; yes, you read that right, Shadowlands. At first, the bright blue world of Ardenweald and the gothic haven of Revendreth were everything I had ever wanted, but as my journey progressed, a feeling of nostalgia never left me. Shadowlands was great (emphasis on has been), but ever since I fell in love with WoW’s colorful cast and twisted story, I just wanted to After.
Of course, I did what all budding Azerothians do: Google “what’s the best add-on for World of Warcraft.” The debate was heated, almost a battle in itself, but two of them became leaders; Legion and The Wrath of the Lich King.
Considering I’m one of those Sylvanas Windrunner apologists (I hate myself too, don’t worry), Wrath of the Lich King was the most logical choice. Not only was this before the Legion, but Sylvanas’ eternal conflict with the Lich King and Arthas Menethil got me; I wanted to know more about the Scourge and the formation of the Forsaken, the class I finally decided to play. “Oh my God,” I said when my bony legs touched Northrend for the first time. I knew Wrath of the Lich King was going to be awesome, and damn it, it was.
So when Blizzard announced the WoTLK Classic iteration, a part of me was excited, but also skeptical at the same time. I had a question in mind: would they be able to do justice?

familiar but different
There is an unmistakable feeling in Northrend, and I was very pleased to see that when I landed there in WoW WoTLK Classic, that feeling of hopelessness was still there.
Ebony Keep has never looked so terrible, its inhabitants still have fantastic names (Sookie’s Banshee never fails to amuse), and the Lich King himself has an aura of awesome majesty.
Icecrown remains a gleaming temple of terror amid whispering snowy winds, and the boreal tundra remains barren and devoid of any color other than white, brown, and gray.
As desperation dominates this desolate place, I would be lying if I said that I am out of my element. That’s World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King i felt like first time i played it.
That’s what I was looking for.
Being dead never felt so good
As expected, I immediately chose the Death Knight, a class released with the iconic expansion. For the first time in my life, I took a draenei (I’ve always been a servant of the Horde) and charged at the undead, hacking and slashing at anyone the Lich King deemed unworthy, just about anything.
I had never played a death knight before, so not only were the abilities new and intimidating, but the entire questline was an absolute joy. From bowing to the whim of the Lich King to vengeful self-sufficiency, the story of these fallen warriors is sad and intriguing.
The game itself is fluid, you can easily determine when to use each ability to deal the most damage, and you can acquire the magnificent Aker Deathsteed, whose mournful cry echoes through the afterlife as a vivid reminder that your character’s life is drawing to a close. its end. end .. and his un-life is just beginning.
Of all the classes I’ve played (and I’ve played way too many), Death Knights are probably one of my favorites. Swapping his holy priestly forms to become the literal embodiment of corruption was an absolute joy, and needless to say, I’d recommend trying this class out when he returns.
Back, back, back again
While classics fans will probably want to throw my undead soul into the depths of the Maw for even broaching this topic, I have to admit that WoLTK Classic WoW is a lot harder than its retail companion; so you will be surprised if you think that everything will be easy.
There are no easy quest targets on the map, which means if you’re anything like me (I hope not, for your own good) you’ll be wandering the smog-ridden Eastern Plaguelands in search of the legendary Nathanos Blightcaller ( Defender and lover of Sylvanas herself) for several hours.
WoW has worked enough for a lot of people by now, but I really enjoyed not following a certain path all the time. The thrill of the hunt is very real and I found myself exploring every little nook and cranny I could.
While it’s nice to have something to tell you where to go, it gets in the way of adventure a bit. Classic it is travel in its own right and you’ll probably die once or twice (or three times, or more than three times), but for some reason it’s worth it.
World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King Classic is everything I wanted. It’s nostalgic, it’s challenging, and most importantly, it’s the perfect take on one of WoW’s best expansions.
As we get closer to launch, I can’t wait to dive into it all again, perhaps as another Alliance character, only time will tell. Until then, you’ll see me digging into the best WoW Classic addons and rewatching old videos in the works; after all, there is something very sweet about seeing the Lich King fall over and over again.
