A dedicated group of Robloxians will soon be holding a funeral for the sandbox game’s iconic “ph” sound in the metaverse. OOF’s funeral will start at 12:00pm PDT / 3:00pm EDT / 8:00pm BST / 9:00pm CET on July 28th and will remain forever on Roblox to honor the famous sound effect.
The day after Roblox announced it would drop ‘wealth’ RBXNews Twitter accountta tweeted to ask his followers if they were interested in attending the funeral because of the sound. When this tweet received more than 350 replies and 1,000 likes, the account later announced he will host the event.
“We decided to do this to give the people of Roblox a fun and positive way to celebrate the loss of sound, which has been an integral part of Roblox since the very beginning,” said a spokesperson for RBXNews PCGamesN via private message. “In addition to being a memorable location, this location will give players the opportunity to take group photos with others, as well as experience the history of sound through an interactive character.”
On July 26, Roblox unexpectedly removed the sound from their deck and replaced it with an alternate sound effect. Many Robloxians have turned to social media with #SaveTheOOF hashtag to express his disappointment at the loss of sound and his unhappiness with its replacement. Some even asked for Roblox consider buying ‘oof’ directly to permanently restore sound without license issues.
As a metaverse platform, it seems like that burial should take place on Roblox. Roblox is undergoing a cultural shift, heading into the future. What used to be called “games” is now called “experiences” by the platform, a term that broadly covers virtual events like concerts and, of course, funerals.
While the Metaverse Funeral may seem like a surreal pop culture venture with sound effects, the history of sound and its status as a global meme make it a particularly important piece of internet history. Sound references are popping up all over social media, YouTube videos, and even song parodies.
