Crucible matches are now skill based in Destiny 2

With the start of Season 18, Destiny 2 Crucible matches are getting a bit of an update, as announced by Bungie in the latest July blog update This Week at Bungie. Bungie offers a skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) system for selecting Crucible playlists in the space game, with plans to roll this feature out to more playlists in Season 19. Bungie has been quite detailed about what to expect from Crucible playlists. Crucible SBMM games. , including how they differ from current login-based matchmaking.

When Destiny 2 Season 18 launches on August 23, Bungie will add a new way for SBMM to control playlists. Previously, the team’s main philosophy was to sacrifice match fairness for good communication and fast matchmaking speed. The standard going forward would be: “Start with a broad definition of match fairness and compromise match speed to keep match fairness and connection quality high.”

The wider skill curve is intended to give players with lower and higher skill levels a better chance of a match.

Bungie said this inevitably means longer matchmaking times, but hopefully the return will include more balanced matches. Bungie said he wants 90% of matches to have fewer than 20 eliminations between the best and worst players on a team, and aims for most matches to end with fewer than 10 points between teams.

Bungie also said that the team will be balancing metrics for the first few weeks of Season 18, so expect matches to change a bit until things start to pick up.

We’ll likely find out more about these and other changes, including Lightfall, during Destiny 2’s big reveal on August 21.

In the meantime, remember to go about your business as usual: check Xur’s location and get the Nightfall weapon for the current week.
