When it came to the official opening of the project Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – remakeit all sounded too good. Or maybe too incredible to be true. Developed by Aspyr Media, which has so far specialized more in porting existing games to other platforms than in-house titles, not having to cram Revan’s story into the current Star Wars canon, Sony’s influence and as a result only being available on PC and PS5 … all this and more can easily lead to the belief of many fans that they have taken too much of Aspyr. And, as it seems, this belief may not be far from reality.
The Bloomberg server published a report according to which BioWare’s 2003 RPG remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic runs into trouble. According to this report, at the end of June/June, the Aspyr developers completed a demo of the remake to showcase the main elements of the game, which was supposed to be presented to people at Sony and Lucasfilm, the company that manages Star Wars. brand. However, a week after the presentation, art director Jason Minor and design director Brad Prince left Aspyr..
The reason for these changes, according to Bloomberg sources, was the state of the demo, which did not suit the Aspyr management. He also said that he didn’t like how much time and resources the creators had to sacrifice to make the demo. To make things worse there should have been disagreements and confusion within the creative team about the release date of the game. Inside, there was talk of a release by the end of this year, which is now even from an external point of view, i.e. given that we haven’t seen anything concrete from the remake, sounds completely unrealistic. However, the developers themselves say they are counting on 2025..
In addition, Aspyr employees should have been told that now the studio intends to focus on other projects, so the development of a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic may even be transferred to another company. Here, of course, the team from Saber Interactive is proposed, which is already involved in the project, although officially only Aspyr helps. However, specific studios that could take over the work are not mentioned, at least not with certainty. In any case, all this should lead to suspicion that the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake project has been postponed indefinitely.
Although Bloomberg cites its own sources, so at the moment this is mostly unconfirmed information, Brad Prince confirmed his departure on his LinkedIn page. Here he indicated not only that he was fired, but also that he was fired overnight. “Everything can change very quickly in a day. I no longer work for Aspyr and am looking for a job”former design director for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake announced on LinkedIn.
The ways of the Force are just incomprehensible though sometimes it seems that the dark side of the Force has really taken over the gaming industry. After all, the single-player Star Wars game from EA and the now-defunct studio Visceral Games was canceled a few years ago, and it wasn’t the only game set in a galaxy far, far away that EA decided to cancel. Not to mention the disastrous release of Star Wars: Battlefront 2 in 2017, which was accompanied by controversy over loot boxes and the multiplayer progression system. What’s worse, nseveral times talked about the problems of development Star Wars Eclipse from Quantic Dream Studios, recently there was a postponement of the abrupt start of the multiplayer action game Star Wars: Hunters, and now we have news again about the problematic development of the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic by Aspyr. Let’s hope that at least Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and other games made by EA and Respawn Entertainment don’t suffer major accidents.
