There will be no Half-Life 3. I mean, maybe, but that’s what I have to tell myself now to move forward. At the same time, I continue to find solace in the vibrant community of Half-Life fans who continue to create incredible speed runs and discover new possibilities for the game’s AI and mechanics. And now, in honor of Valve’s legendary 1998 FPS, Half-Life fans are planning to set a new world record on Steam, and everyone is invited.
On August 14, 2022, at 15:00 GMT sharp, the Half-Life community, mobilized by YouTubers Radiation Hazard and Noclick, will flock to Steam and unlock their copies of Half-Life. The goal is to break the SteamDB game record for concurrent users, which is currently hovering around 6,000. It’s a very achievable goal, especially considering that in 2021, as part of an event called Breaking the Bar, the same community of Half-Life managed to attract 16,000 people playing Half-Life 2 simultaneously, breaking the previous record and laying the groundwork for the sci-fi shooter’s enduring popularity.
If you want to participate, the rules are simple. First, make sure you’re playing a standard copy of the original Half-Life, and not Half-Life Source, Opposing Force, Blue Shift, Black Mesa, or any other modified or expanded FPS. Second, you must play for at least 30 minutes, otherwise your presence will not be recorded in the Steam database.
You can join in and spread the word using the hashtag #RememberFreeman, and several famous Half-Life YouTubers will also be streaming gameplay on that day. More information can be found in the Radiation Risks video below.
That is all. Get out your crowbars, heat up your pans in the microwave, and prepare to remind the world that even if it never comes back, we still love Half-Life.
