In 2020, we saw the announcement of three film and TV series projects from the world of the Resident Evil horror series. The first was Endless Dark, which came out last summer and was pretty mediocre. At the end of the year, we were waiting for the disastrous film “Welcome to Raccoon City”, which relied on high-quality fan service. And then we finally saw the last of the projects, which from the very beginning sounded much worse. And how did he end up? Well, first of all, I have to say that my opinion is very different from other RE fans.
- Premiere date: 07/14/2022
- Genre: Action, post-apocalyptic
- Showrunner: Andrew Dabb
- Scenario: Mary Leah Sutton, Andrew Dabb
Nothing for the fans
The series Resident Evil: The Cure takes place in two time frames. The first shows the year 2022 and the events in New Raccoon City, where the Umbrella company is based, trying to regain its good reputation. Albert Wesker, who works as a biochemist on Joy’s miracle cure, moves here with his daughters. However, he has one catch, he contains a t-virus, and by this alone it should be clear to you that sooner or later he will get out of control. The second line takes place in 2036 and follows an adult Jade Wesker trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.
If after reading the synopsis you are telling yourself that this is not Resident Evil, then you are absolutely right. The new series has little to do with the brand. Sure, you’ll find a few familiar names here, but it’s more like a “don’t say” than an interesting connection to the lore of the entire series. After all, it is also difficult with him. Resident Evil: The Cure, of course, is not canon, but the creators said that they take into account the events of the games. However, the truth is that only partly. Only the Raccoon City incident is properly covered here, and even that is largely underused, which is a big shame.

You’ll already find plenty of reviews online from fans of the series who will tell you that this is the worst series ever. To be honest, I’m not surprised by the disappointment, because Resident Evil: The Cure does seem like more of a mockery to fans. Of course, you will find some very good references here, but the whole lore here is so distorted and completely unnecessarily altered that it’s just a different series. And that’s how I understood it. Like a new brand doing its job. I think the show would have been a lot better if it just didn’t have the Resident Evil sticker.
Amazing fun
But now to the series itself. I confess, although the annotation at first did not interest me at all, the story seemed to me quite solid. The combination of the two storylines is interesting, and each one is completely different. The current one is a classic post-apo that relies primarily on action. I thought the New Raccoon City line was better where we learn more about Umbrella and the main characters.
And speaking of characters, it has to be said that this is one of the biggest problems with this series. There are quite a few very interesting secondary characters in both lines that have potential for the future, but the filmmakers overwhelmingly decided to kill them off after a while. Instead, we are left “trapped” with the incredibly annoying main couple Billy and Jade Wesker, whose behavior is simply incomprehensible. The latter, in particular, tries to act like a big rebel, but her “amazing” statements are likely to alienate many viewers already in the first episode. In addition, the dialogue often seems frankly awkward, and even good acting does little to save them. The highlight, of course, is Lance Reddick as Albert Wesker.
I can at least please you with the fact that the first series is the worst, and then the quality rises to the fourth series, which is clearly the best, then drops again. However, I can’t say that I had to force myself to watch it, on the contrary, the plot intrigued me and I was curious to see what would happen next. I just feel like the creators are having a snack because the first series ends almost halfway through the story in both lines.
In any case, unlike Welcome to Raccoon City, I have to praise the visuals and set design. We finally got something that at least has good manufacturing quality and it definitely helps overall. In addition, you can look forward to various types of monsters where RE fans will finally find their way. There are slimes, mutated spiders and dogs, or even Dr. Salvador from Resident Evil 4. Here we also find iconic weapons such as Red9 from the same game. First of all, there are zombies that are called “Zero”. However, these are not the slow zombies that we know from the games, they can run and are very aggressive. Of course, this completely changes the whole dynamic and only emphasizes what I was talking about, this is more action than horror. You really won’t be afraid.
But I must say that some of the fight scenes are very well filmed, and I liked them. However, this series has another problem with this series, namely the absolutely terrible music. I don’t remember ever experiencing anything like this, in short, any song that plays here is completely out of place and completely ruins the whole vibe.
While the review was mostly negative, in conclusion I have to say that I simply enjoyed the series. You have to forgive him a lot, be it the already mentioned music, the illogical and annoying behavior of the characters, or the main thing is that this is not Resident Evil. And how you like it depends on how you perceive it. If you’re expecting anything even slightly true to the games, you’ll be disappointed, if not outright pissed off. Aside from a few game references and familiar monsters, the creators here spit on the game’s lore rather than use it conscientiously. But if you can accept the fact that this is a show that just uses a familiar name as a label to grab attention, then maybe, like me, you’ll enjoy it.
