Fortnite X Marvel Comic Review: Zero War 1

After the great success (especially by the standards of the Czech comics market) of the six-episode Batman/Fortnite comic, where for the first time a connection was made between the traditional comic book with the video game Fortnite and the DC Comics worlds/heroes with Epic Games heroes, it was only a matter of time before they too include a rival comic book family in the game. Marvel heroes have already appeared directly in the game several times (mostly in the form of skins in connection with the premiere of some movie), but this time for the first time we have the opportunity to evaluate how far they function in this game world on the pages of their home environment. print comic.

slow start

The story begins in a bar where Spider-Man has come to try to recruit Wolverine for a planned battle for the fate of the island and, as a result, all existing realities (at the base of the island lies an incalculable energy “zero point” with the properties of a Big Bang, capable of both creation and and destroy). As is usually the case when someone tries to annoy Wolverine in a bar, Spider-Man’s blandishments don’t do much. But what will be required is the arrival of Agent Jones and a particularly handsome, red-haired Imaginary warrior. I’m not even surprised because her skin is truly one of the most beautiful in the game… um, I digress. Anyway, Imagined gets Wolverine’s attention and then properly explains the situation and plan to him.

The plan actually has two parts – one is to recruit the best fighters from the Marvel Universe and bring them to the island for a decisive battle with the insidious organization “Imaginary Order” or “IO” for short. The second part of the plan is actually only about Spider-Man, who in “our” reality is supposed to return the Zero Point Fragment originally stolen by Galactus during one of the video game’s big events at the turn of the season. More or less the entire first issue of the comic is dedicated to explaining this plan, including the associated history of video game events. And therein lies my main problem with the first release.

More or less the entire first volume of the comic is dedicated to explaining the plan.

Whereas the previous Batman story immediately threw the hero into a maelstrom of events and we could already enjoy a fair amount of action and emotions during the beginning of the story, here the first book falls more or less only on dialogue scenes, trying to quickly explain a bunch of historical events and characters from a video game for those who may not have played it at the time and are not familiar with its lore. You can laugh at Spider-Man jokes here and there, but that doesn’t change the fact that the first volume is very slow and flat in plot. I hope this prelude pays off for the creators, and I hope they make good use of it in future notebooks.

Spiderman on

As we are already used to these comics, this workbook also includes a skin for your character in the game Fortnite. And it’s Spider-Man himself, especially in the “Zero” suit, referring to this particular comic (and Point Zero). In addition to Spider-Man, you also get a stylish “back-bling” pendant in the form of a metal spider drone on the back. As usual, the code from the last page of the notebook must be entered directly into the Epic Games web interface after logging into your game profile/name in order for the costume to appear in the game.

So while I’m not quite sure about the quality of the script yet, the art has traditionally been on a decent level, just like previous Fortnite crossover comics. But I’m kind of wondering if Fortnite really needs this cross collaboration and if it wouldn’t work (including sales) much better on its own, as its own world and story. In the end, the best aspect of this particular notebook, in my opinion, is the explanation and connection of the events and characters from the game. However, we will see how this story develops further and how far Marvel heroes get a chance to show off in it.

The second part will not have to wait long, because it will be released tomorrow, Wednesday, July 13th.
