The first full trailer for Return to Monkey Island is here, acting as a full gameplay reveal for the highly anticipated sequel to the adventure game. Monkey Island 5’s gameplay trailer teases a bold and possibly divisive art style, a second playable character, and possibly a decade-old secret revealed.
The trailer certainly reveals a lot, but not much, of the pirate game’s story. Returning characters include series protagonist Guybrush Threepwood, whose longtime actor Dominic Armato provides most of the voiceovers, and other regulars like Elaine Marley, serial villain LeChuck, evil skull Murray, and salesman Stan. . Other returning characters include cartographer Wally, swordsman Carl, and even a short-sighted observer. Interestingly, it appears that Elaine is playable at various points, for the first time in the series.
However, there are two big talking points in the trailer. First of all, it’s a hint that the main secret of the first Monkey Island game, which has been on Ron Gilbert’s mind since 1990, could be revealed, so it’s time to reveal it. Second, the angular, storybook-like art style, which has already caused controversy, but remains a distinctive and elegant choice.

What do you think of the art style? It’s certainly classy, but we expect some fans to be disappointed; After all, this is not a retro pixel art game.
