Backend improvements
A common problem with players was that the Playlist wasn’t showing enough sessions even if they thought they should. When you create a game in D2R, it is broadcast in one of the various game environments in your region.
Before climbing the ladder, the Game List only showed the games closest to you in terms of connectivity, from a single environment in the region. It was a choice made to maintain a high quality gaming experience in any game you wish to participate in through the lobby, but we found our policy to be very aggressive.
With the release of Ladder, we’ve expanded the ability to provide gamers with gameplay in up to three game environments. This allowed them to see more sessions in the Game List without sacrificing connection quality, but still players couldn’t see enough games.
With patch 2.4.3 we decided to expand the functionality even further. Now any region environment you can communicate with with a good connection will contribute to the Playlist’s results. To provide even more options for those who want to join a game, we’ve doubled the maximum number of sessions that can appear in the Game List at once, from 20 to 40.
We’ve also improved game details to update in near real-time. You can still manually update the Playlist, a feature we keep to prevent the list from updating when players select a session. We’ve made these improvements to both console and PC versions.
Console lobby updates
After the excellent debut of season 1, our team is back to focus on functions that need more attention. The group’s research was by far the most urgent to deal with.
Patch 2.4.3 greatly improves the multiplayer experience on consoles by providing new and improved ways to create and find games by replacing Match Creator Party Search and Playlist.
Three options appear in front of you
Pressing the Play button on the main menu with your chosen online hero will now give you three options to play online:
- Exclusive: Join a custom game that will not appear in the Game List. The only way others can join the game is to get a Friend List or an invitation.
- Game Creator: Create a public game that will appear in the Game List.
- Game List: View the game list, use the search function, or join a public game.
matchmaker
Game Builder will give you the ability to quickly create the type of game you want. To assist you in your quest, all previous game categories available in Party Finder have been returned to Game Builder.
Selecting and confirming one of these game categories will generate a preset name for the game, accompanied by a number to avoid creating games with duplicate names. Level Difference, once available only to PC players, has been added as a match creation option.
We’ve also added another category called Custom with two options:
- Generic Match: Create a Generic Match that will appear with a name you choose in the Match List.
- Password Game: Create a public game with a password you must enter to log in. Just like in the lobby on PC, an encrypted game will not appear in the Game List, but can be accessed via the separate Join button in the Game List menu, which can be accessed by pressing the Search Game Name button and accessing the Custom category.
At the top right of the screen you will see a preview of the match’s generated or customized name. Once you are happy with your choices and confirm them, you can begin your Sanctuary journey.
match list
Selecting the Playlist button will display up to 40 sessions created by other players that your character has access to. You can use the search function or apply a keyword filter to find a specific session to find specific games more easily. Filter options include these parameters:
- Mode: Filter to show Normal, Nightmare, or Hell games only, or any combination of the three options.
- Ping: Narrow the field to show only games with a certain connection quality or better.
- Game Name: Pressing the Triangle Button on the PlayStation Controller, the Y Button on the Xbox Controller, or the X Button on the Nintendo Switch Controller in the Game List menu opens the Search Game Name menu. Here you will be able to search for both preset and custom game names using the same familiar system you will use during Game Creation. Searching for a game name through the custom category will only show results generated through that category. Searching using one of the preset categories will only show results generated using the specific preset category. For example, selecting the Abyss of Evil preset option will only show results from games with the same preset. Conversely, searching for Abyss of Evil in the Custom category will yield customized results containing these phrases. Custom games, with or without passwords, can be accessed from the Search Game Name menu.
Editing any of these filters will update the game list and display a new session list (up to 40) based on the selected criteria. There will also be a button to manually refresh the list at any time.
PC lobby updates
We want multiplayer lobbies to pave the way for hours of demon slaying, loot gathering, and unforgettable moments with friends. Unfortunately, many players struggle to find specific games to join. That’s why we’ve added a search function to the lobby – you can now enter specific keywords or names to get a list of games based on your search terms.
With Patch 2.4.3, the Game List will show the link quality of each session in a description that will appear when you hover over a particular game. Sessions will appear in the Game List based on the quality of the connection, allowing you to better evaluate which game to join.
