Outlast, a terrifying first-person horror game from developers Red Barrels, has set a new world speed record in the 100% Extremely Hard category, beating the previous record by an incredibly close seven seconds.
Falex, a Finnish runner who rides Outlast as part of the six-day Twitch Marathon, set a record time of 27 minutes 53 seconds, beating the previous record of 28 minutes 25 seconds by just over half a minute. The 100% category in Outlast is particularly challenging, as it requires players to find all of the game’s files and capture every notable gruesome moment that protagonist Miles Upshur adds to his journal with a handheld camera.
There are many cheats in Outlast speedrun. Saving and exiting the game from the beginning, for example, right after Miles crawled through a hole in the fence around the perimeter of the Mount Massive Orphanage, means that when reloading, he will jump an invisible chapter skip, move forward a few meters and unlock the ability to jump and land without wobbling, saving precious seconds. It’s also possible to rotate Miles’s body in the air, which means you don’t have to precisely rotate every jump and grappling hook: you can just jump, spin, and get into position, all in one fluid motion, again. racking up significant time savings throughout the game.
Most important, though, is the ability to slip outside of level caps and skip large parts of the game altogether. Like Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Frictional’s Soma, opening doors in Outlast requires you to hold down the left mouse button. and then drag the mouse towards you, as if you were pulling a door. If you are interrupted by the movement, Miles peut échouer et se teleporter en haut de la porte, and from there, you can use the lacunes dans la géométrie des niveaux Outlast pour tomber à travers le monde et atterrir dans la zone suivante ou le chapitre Next.
You can see all of these tricks in action in a Falex run, which given how streamlined Outlast has been since its release in 2014, is likely to be a tough record.
Of course, you can go through the game much faster. On any streak % that doesn’t require collecting notes or journal entries, you can reach the end of Outlast in under ten minutes using limit bugs – the current record for any % of Dutch player JayV is ridiculously under eight minutes six seconds, and definitely worth checking out if you want to feel like you’ll never be good at gaming again.
If you want to see more speed games, Summer Games Done Quick has just kicked off its 2022 marathon, with Elden Ring, Grand Theft Auto, and Final Fantasy all scheduled for release next week.
