Starfield Religion Shares Its Name With Fallout 76’s Butterfly Worshipers

It’s unclear if the Fallout universes and the upcoming RPG Starfield have any connection. Not impossible, but highly unlikely – there’s no mention in the Fallout games that humans mastered long-distance space travel before the bombs fell on their universe in 2077. And let’s face it, you are most likely. If your own planet is devastated by a nuclear apocalypse, have the resources to colonize other star systems.

However, we may have seen something connecting the space game to Fallout 76, the latest installment in the Fallout series, during the Starfield gameplay reveal on Xbox and Bethesda Showcase. It’s a bit of a weak link, so bear with us. ..

During the show, we got a taste of some of the Starfield traits you can give your character. Some of them talk about different religions in the Starfield universe, including one where you worship something called the Great Serpent.

However, it’s not a potential giant snake god we’re currently interested in. The descriptions of the attributes of the ascended universal and the enlightened ascended attributes speak of two rival religious groups, one being the Universe Sanctum and the other – the drumbeat – enlightened.

Fallout 76 also has a religious group called the Enlightened, a splinter group from the Cult of Mothman obsessed with a large, human-sized moth creature, as you can probably deduce. Enlightened members adore the purple-eyed Wise Mothman, as discovered in the Night of the Mothman DLC released in late 2021.

So, could this moth-crazed collective really show up in Starfield? Well, if you put any money on it, you bet it’s probably just a combination of names. That said, Fallout 76’s Enlightened seems pretty up to date on all things astronomy. Several dialogue elements reference the alignment of planets and stars as part of the Wise Mothman Equinox, and how this Equinox gives the creature powers beyond its normal abilities.

Could the Enlightened go to space in the roughly 230-year gap between Fallout 76 and Starfield? Probably not, we know we’re hanging on to straws here. But it would be funny if it wasn’t just to have a connection to the Fallout universe, but to have this group formed around their collective obsession with a giant moth.

While we don’t know much about the religions of the space game at this point, we do know a little about the factions of Starfield. Hopefully, we’ll know a bit more about the Enlightened, Sacred Universe, followers of the Great Serpent, and other religions before the Starfield release date.
