The Total War offerings on PC Game Pass this month will be expanded with the strategy game series’ historic first entry into the subscription service. Total War: Three Kingdoms, which was pulled from the game by developer Creative Assembly last year, is coming to PC with Game Pass on June 21, giving a whole new group of gamers the chance to experience one of the bloodiest eras of Chinese history.
Three Kingdoms started out as a controversial game among the historical Total War offerings thanks to some key changes to how the base game worked. Focusing on the period of the Three Kingdoms novels, the focus is more on the characters and their interactions. Instead of having direct control over their armies, generals command retinues of subordinate commanders, each leading his own troops into battle.
Another controversial major change was the inclusion of a “Romance” mode, which gives key characters such as Lu Bu and Dong Zhuo god-like powers on the battlefield. However, players who did not like this more mythological portrayal of the characters can select the “Records” mode, which attempts to present a more historical account of the fall of the Han dynasty and the subsequent reunification of the region.
Over time, fans fell in love with Three Kingdoms and were greatly dismayed when the Creative Assembly announced that it would end development in 2021 as the studio focused on a new game that would become its own series within Total War.
Game Pass for PC subscribers will be able to play Three Kingdoms on June 21. official account tweet.
