Diablo 4’s Necromancers are the most customizable characters in the series.

The Diablo IV Quarterly Update has been released, detailing the Diablo 4 Necromancer class, which was recently announced during the Xbox Bethesda Showcase. While the lord of the undead may be familiar to fans of the series or anyone who plays Diablo Immortal Necromancer, Diablo 4 Lead Class Designer Adam Jackson outlined a few key ways the team is customizing a class in an RPG to make it more flexible, with something that is on offer for both newcomers and long-time Necromancer players.

A key feature of the Necromancer in Diablo IV is the Book of the Dead, a class-specific item you automatically start with that allows you to summon undead warriors and bend them to your will. Summon types include Skeleton Warriors, Mages, and Golems, and you can further customize them from there. For example, warriors can specialize as reapers, defenders, or offensive fighters, with unique playstyles for each subclass and a set of skills that you can further customize.

If you don’t like one of the summon types, the Book of the Dead allows you to choose the “Sacrifice” option to, well… sacrifice it. This makes it impossible to summon them for a permanent buff, though Jackson didn’t specify what the buffs would be.

As for the Necromancer himself, there are four specializations he can choose from, though “choose” seems more restrictive than Blizzard suggests. While the Necromancer draws its abilities from the Blood, Shadow, Bone, and Army specialties, the goal is to allow you to create just about any undead lord you have in mind.

Blood abilities regenerate HP and deal damage over a wide area, while Darkness tends to focus more on applying debuffs over a wide area, knocking enemies back and negating their health. Bones and Army are closer to the necromancer abilities of Diablo’s past, with abilities like Bone Prison and the standard ability to reanimate corpses into minions.

There’s plenty of room for different Necromancer builds though, with the ability to summon corpses via the skill bar or simply create new ones with your other skills.

“We went through many iterations on how we want the undead summoning experience to feel for the player, and how much of their skill bar should be dedicated to that part of the class,” Jackson said. “To that end, we’ve come up with what we believe to be the best possible build to ensure players have as much customization as possible, not only for their own army, but also for the other abilities they want to use to support their own. . unique game style.

However, it will be some time before you can try Necromancer for yourself. Activision Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo IV will be released in 2023, but the release date is just the beginning. Diablo IV will have multiple rounds of DLC, including full story expansions.
