Blizzard sent out a tweet announcing the player count for Diablo Immortal, stating that the new free-to-play RPG is the “biggest release” in the series’ history. According to the tweet, Diablo Immortal has already been installed over 10 million times. Of course, it’s worth noting that Diablo Immortal is free to play on PC, iOS, and Android devices, so this is a comparison to previous games in the series that required a purchase to play.
This news will no doubt be welcomed by Activision Blizzard, after the release of the action RPG game was surrounded by various controversies regarding its microtransaction systems. Lead designer Joe Grubb said that Diablo Immortal’s microtransactions never bypass the main game. However, due to the game’s monetization opportunities, its release was stalled in several countries.
Additionally, a recent controversy erupted when a YouTuber discovered hidden loot caps in Diablo Immortal that limit the amount of daily progress players can make, further slowing down the free-to-play experience. There has also been talk of the potential amount that players can spend on the game, with some claiming that over $100,000 could be spent to upgrade a single character.
However, it is clear that these problems have not stopped a large number of players from trying the game. It will be interesting to see if those numbers translate into a lot of concurrent players, or if many of those 10 million plus players will leave the game as they dig deeper and start finding the game’s monetization systems.
Here is a tweet from the Diablo Immortal team regarding the news:
Glory to the heroes of the Sanctuary.
In just one week, Diablo Immortal will be the biggest release in franchise history.
