Two popular Team Fortress 2 mods have returned after their creators reopened downloads, both citing a lack of communication from Valve regarding plans to bring their projects to Steam in a more official capacity. The download of Open Fortress and TF2 Classic was stopped in September 2021 “due to an agreement with Valve”. Both teams have posted statements on their websites indicating that they intend to resume service until they receive a different response from the FPS game developer.
Both teams say they shut down their multiplayer mods after receiving an email from Valve asking them to put it on hold. According to both development teams, discussions have been taking place to bring the projects to Steam as officially recognized mods. However, the two say they haven’t heard any contact from Valve since initial talks, despite repeatedly trying to contact them through several different communication channels.
The team at Eminoma, the creators of TF2 Classic, a mod designed to recreate the feel of the game in its first year of existence, posted a lengthy statement on the mod’s website describing the difficulties encountered during the game’s time. The team states: “On March 10, about six months after your last response, we decided to send one last email informing us that we plan to reopen our downloads until they confirm that they want us to close them. So our reasons for reopening are, in short, Valve’s lack of response.”
The Open Fortress team, who created a Quake-inspired arena shooter mod using the TF2 code base and art style, posted a shorter blog titled “Welcome Back” that addressed similar issues. They also addressed Valve’s radio silence, stating that “After a while we still haven’t heard from them. We waited, thinking they would eventually come back to us, but they never did.
With recent news that Valve has responded to the #SaveTF2 campaign following an outcry from the fan community seeking any sign of support for the popular game, rumors that Valve left the two major mod teams in the black on last year is certainly worrying. by some.
