20 organizations took part in the fight against loot boxes

Publishers and developers of games with loot boxes may face serious problems in the future. After restrictions in Belgium and the Netherlands, the scene is 20 consumer groups from 18 European countries. Together they are taking coordinated action and asking the authorities to regulate loot boxes.

These organizations are backing a new report from the Norwegian Consumer Council (NCC) titled Insert a Coin: How the gaming industry is exploiting consumers with loot boxes. The task of all participants take a number of measuresincluding the prohibition of misleading design, additional protection for minors and transparency in transactions.

The NCC report accuses video game companies of exploiting consumers through mechanisms they describe as “predatory” and “addictive”.

The document in question is 59 pages long and features games. FIFA 22 as well as Raid: Shadow LegendsThey, along with others, have used a wide arsenal of tricks to get consumers to spend as much time and money as possible, and to abuse consumers who hope to be rewarded even when the chances and chances of doing so are slim.

The groups represent consumers in Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Everything is coordinated by the NCC, which is campaigning with the European Consumer Organization in Brussels.
