PlayStation’s new tier-based PS Plus subscription service is finally out and will be distributed regionally by the end of June 2022. PlayStation players in the UK will have to wait until June 23 to get the new service, but players in Asia accessed it earlier today – May 24 – with a surprising discovery. PlayStation doesn’t seem to accept pre-purchased PS Plus discounts when players try to upgrade their existing subscriptions to higher tiers.
However, what does this actually mean? Well, “alexyin2” took to Reddit to explain what it all means, and the “TLDR” is this: if users had purchased the original plan at a discount, additional costs would have been added to the cost of the new upgrade.
Taking their own case as an example, “alexyin2” reveals that they bought three years of PS Plus at a 33% discount – about NT$796 in total – for a subscription that should have cost NT$1188 per year. If they wanted to upgrade to the next PS Plus subscription costing NT$1988 per year, they would have to pay NT$3576 for three years of upgraded PS Plus subscription instead of NT$2400 for three years. it’s worth upgrading to the standard fare.
However, Reddit user “alexyin2” isn’t the only one with this issue and has posted it online, suggesting it wasn’t an isolated incident. A message from ‘andyppbb’ reflects the situation and explains that if you bought, for example, a year of PS Plus at 25% off, you will have to pay the standard upgrade fee and an additional 25% based on monthly conversion . As you can imagine, this means it will add up very quickly for PS Plus subscribers who have stacked subscriptions in their PSN accounts.
Despite the fact that this will only get worse as the months you save on PS Plus increase, the truth remains, at least for PS Plus subscribers in Asia. PlayStation doesn’t appear to be giving a discount ahead of the launch of the new PS Plus subscription system.

As a market without the ability to stream PS3 games digitally, gamers in Asia will be able to access PS Plus Deluxe instead of PS Plus Premium. We don’t know how the issue described above will affect PS Plus subscribers in regions where PS Premium is available, but things are not looking good for those who have been accumulating on our PSN accounts for the past year or two.
