Looking for a company that could develop games based on comic book and movie brands, Marvel turned not only to Sony but also to Microsoft. It happened in 2014 but Microsoft turned down the offer, saying it wanted to focus on its own brands.. Sony, on the other hand, agreed to develop Spiderman Marvelwhich was released in 2018 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive and has sold over 20 million copies.
Some interesting behind-the-scenes information was provided by Jay Ong, former Vice President of Marvel Games Division, in The Ultimate History of Video Games Vol.2.
“I was hired to understand why Marvel video games didn’t do well, unlike movies. We needed a partner who believed in licensed games and could invest in franchising in the long run. We chose three companies, but one of them, Nintendo, at that time only worked with its own brands. Then I spoke to Microsoft and Sony, and it may seem strange to you, but Microsoft refused to work with us, because at that time they were focusing on creating and developing their own brands. states Jay Ong in the book.

As we know today, Marvel’s Spider-Man was a huge commercial success, Sony bought the studio Insomniac Games, and now they are working on Spiderman 2 by Marvel and Wolverine Marvel.
