Digital Foundry reviewed version PS5 from God of War Ragnarok from technical point of viewUnderstanding the progress made compared to the first episode dating back to 2018 and analyzing the various graphic modes.
The result speaks of graphically excellent work, although it was basically designed for a title. PS4, technologically speaking. Lots of interesting points the review touches on. Let’s see the main ones.
3D model Kratos polygonally very rich. Overall, all the main characters were created by scanning the actors in high resolution and capturing their performances in the studio; this is now a pretty obvious practice for this level of production.
Indirect lighting is pre-calculated but of very high quality and superior to the first God of War. The textures are more detailed and there are fewer errors in the light. Terrain and snow deformations use tessellation to look more realistic. Quality mode does not have ray tracing, but uses dynamic cube maps. Performance mode loses details, but overall it offers a good compromise over the other in terms of visuals.
Interestingly, the distance between the PS4 and PS5 versions is described as shorter than seen on Horizon Forbidden West. The subject will be touched upon in a dedicated video, but the mention only confirms the fact that God of War Ragnarok is a game originally designed for Sony’s older generation console and then ported to the PS5.
this graphics modes there are four: performance with 60fps, a dynamic resolution that oscillates between 1440 and 2160p, an average of 1872p and generally lower but acceptable visual quality; quality mode instead goes to 30pfps for 2160p fixed resolution, obviously the graphics detail is much higher; 40hz mode with dynamic resolution oscillating between 1800 and 2160p, as well as a visual quality similar to the quality mode maintaining 30fps; Finally, a high frame rate mode with a fixed resolution of 1440p, a visual quality equal to the performance mode, and an oscillating frame rate of 80-90fps with peaks of 120fps.
this loading times On PS5, it is 10-20 seconds faster than PS4.
Digital Foundry concludes by talking about an essentially cross-gen title. For more details on the game, we invite you to read our God of War Ragnarok review.
