RGG Studio boss Masayoshi Yokoyama has officially revealed the reasons for the show’s name change. “Yakuza” in “Like a Dragon”. In short, it is a linked choice. History your game.
Yokoyama approved RGG will no longer use Yakuza in games and revealed that, as players predicted, change had already begun with Yakuza: Like A Dragon. The information was shared with IGN USA at Tokyo Game Show 2022.
Yokoyama said:[Il titolo di Yakuza 7] Yakuza: It was Like A Dragon, if we suddenly released this game without ‘Yakuza’ in the title, people would wonder: ‘What is this game? What’s happening?’. The response to the name Like A Dragon was pretty good, so it gave us the confidence to take the Yakuza and go straight to Like A Dragon. We’re also talking about the underworld in terms of history, but not the Yakuza. So it makes sense not to include them in the name. If we continue this structure, the name of the game is Yakuza: Ishin! [Ma] Not Yakuza: Your job! It’s not about that. Like a Dragon: Your job! makes more sense.”
In simple terms, saga is no longer directly linked to Yakuza and the name change is the best thing to fit the plot. RGG Studio places a lot of emphasis on the narrative of the series, and in fact noted that even the gameplay is conditioned by the plot: Like a Dragon can also be a party game if it serves to support the narrative.

The first is based on Kiryu and is based on events that took place after Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. The third, Yakuza: Like A Dragon (2020), continues the story and stars both Kiryu and Ichiban Kasuga. Like A Dragon: Ishin and Like A Dragon Gaiden will be released in 2023, while Like A Dragon 8 will be released in 2024.
