As a result of recent events with Xbox Game Pass, a controversy has arisen regarding subscription services from the main companies in the video game market: Should big games be streamed on services? This is something Microsoft did and currently PS Plus doesn’t, although some users are requesting that the first games be added to the Extra subscription.

This question was asked Shuhei Yoshida, head of independent companies at PlayStation and former head of Sony Worldwide Studios, in an interview with the Gaming Industry. In it, the Japanese manager makes it clear that on PlayStation continue to rely on the traditional modelie making premium launches.

“Our approach with Extra is to love helping publishers with lifecycle management. I was managing first parties at PlayStation, so I know it’s like in the movies: a movie comes out in theaters first, then pays to see it or is watched on a subscription serviceor on free television, generating new revenue every time and reaching a wider audience,” says Yoshida.

We believe in the premium version of a gameShuhei Yoshida“We believe in launching a premium game at the time of release and maybe six months, three months or three years from now. We plan to be included in the service when game sales drop (PS Plus Extra) can help new and broad audiences discover these games.”

Even though they had premiered games like Stray on PS Plus Extra, it wasn’t theirs, so everything seems to point to that. Sony does not intend to change its publishing policy in the short term. Yoshida made it clear in the interview that they’re currently focusing on PlayStation VR2, where he expects independent productions to take risks we don’t usually see in big blockbusters.
