One of the problems with FromSoftware’s games on PS4 and Xbox One is stuttering. transmitted through blood and also the latest Hand Ring. Someone amateur patches however, they fixed it on modified PS4s, as demonstrated in a recent Digital Foundry video by Rich Leadbetter.

By stutter we mean clicks or micro-shots that can be detected during gameplay. The cause of stuttering in FromSoftware games is the presence of frames on the screen that are rendered slower or faster than the standard 33 milliseconds. Although technically the fluency remains at 30 fps, this difference is perceived in a snap.

Patches fix the issue by smoothing out the frame times so deleting it stuttering. There are patches for Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Although the game is not compatible with the modified PS4, it can also be patched to Elden Ring (the patch can be used for network testing).

In the video we can see Leadbetter talking to Illusion, the hacker who wrote the patches, according to which FromSoftware uses a special tool to block the framerate that is the source of the problems. To solve this, simply replace the FromSoftware code with the standard Sony code. Too bad that doing this produces some input lag.

After all, FromSoftware is certainly not famous for the technical cleanliness of its games, and in that sense it often falls short. Let’s hope it gets better in the next chapters.
