Returnal’s story was complicated to create, but there is still a mystery to be solved within the game.
Housemarque’s narrative designer invites players to discover the secret of the Tower of Sisyphus.
Last year, PlayStation surprised us with the release of Returnal, the PS5’s first game. house brand and one of the highlights of 2021. In a recent interview, the narrative designer talked about some ideas that will eventually be used in their next video game, as well as how much it cost them to create the story.
It was difficult to combine the narrative with the mystery“It was like walking a tightrope. The narrative director, my boss Greg Louden, and I tried to make sure they were both included,” Eevi Korhonen told VGC about combining narration with letting the actor solve mysteries. but we had to get them to understand some of that story.”
In Returnal, the story is told with short narrations shown to the player, longer audio recordings, and some written documents. However, due to this feature, it is difficult to measure. roguelike action itemsso the final result could not be seen by the team until the game was almost over.
Regarding the mysteries, Korhonen explains that many of them were discovered based on what he read on the internet. Again, There’s still a hidden secret in the Tower of Sisyphus despite the fact that no one noticed, but after his announcement he assures that someone will be able to reveal it soon. Of course, it’s more of a “philosophical reference” than anything else.
Korhonen also made it clear that Housemarque is convinced they can take even more risks now that they’re under the PlayStation umbrella. Let’s hope the Finnish studio’s next film will have a similar effect to Returnal, which both the public and professional critics love so much.
