Gamescom 2023: Impressions from playing The Thaumaturge

Polish detective role-playing game with turn-based combat.

Polish studio Fool’s Theory is still a relative newcomer, but it employs many veterans and is launching with great ambition. Last year, it was announced that it would be working on a remake of the first Witcher, but there is also another project in development in the local offices: Thaumaturge. A turn-based RPG set in an alternative Warsaw of the last century, you take on the role of one of the so-called Thaumaturges – people who can perceive and control local monsters or manipulate the thoughts of others.

It was a very informative, maybe hour-long demo. It’s absolutely necessary for such a complex game, but on the other hand it’s not really a good demo for Gamescom because you can’t spend that much time on everything.

But how does Thaumaturge play? It’s basically an isometric RPG with a lot of detective work, not unlike Disco Elysium. You’ll be looking for clues, interrogating locals, and tracking down the culprits of crimes that are common here. In doing so, you’ll be exploring the local streets and interiors.

Dialogue and choice are, of course, the key element of the entire game. Your decisions matter, and tasks can be solved in several ways, although not all of them should be available if, for example, you do not have a sufficient level of a certain ability. But if all peaceful approaches fail, you will still have the option to go to war.

As already mentioned here, it is turn-based, but its concept may remind, for example, of the turn-based game Othercide, which I highly rated. There are no classic, pre-determined moves here either, but each of your actions takes a certain amount of time, and the order is determined accordingly. It is up to you to decide whether you prefer a quick attack with less damage, but with an almost guaranteed hit, or a more powerful attack that requires more time to prepare and can be interrupted by your opponent.

You can also use various buffs and debuffs and, above all, control one of the monsters that you gradually master. They have unique designs and abilities. For example, I played a certain vampire who could suck the lives of enemies and give them to the main character. The fights can be quite difficult and require strong tactics, but if you like it, you will definitely enjoy it.

The only part where the game lets down a bit is the technical handling. It looks nice, but I often encountered various visual glitches or annoying bugs. The developers still have time, so hopefully they will be able to fix most of the problems before the release. Otherwise, the game is really great and is one of the hidden gems of this year’s Gamescom that you will definitely not want to miss when it is released in full. It offers fun gameplay, an attractive setting, and a fascinating story.

The Miracle Worker will be released in the fourth quarter of this year. For now, it is only aimed at PC.
