An accessible XCOM for fans of the popular JRPG series.
Sega brought some interesting games to Gamescom this year, and two of them are from the popular Persona series, which as one of the few JRPGs to really break through in the West and has a huge following in Europe and America. And while players are still waiting for the announcement of the supposed sixth part, they can already look forward to a remake of the trio coming out early next year, and another spin-off, Persona 5, this year. It’s subtitled Tactica and plays a little differently than the main series.
Turn-based combat has been around throughout the series, but Tactica takes it a bit further and makes it more of an “XCOM” style. You’re on a grid-based map, where of course cover, flanking, and all the other aspects you know from similar games come into play. In my opinion, Tactica is by far the closest to Mario + Rabbids, especially the second one, because it also has free movement. As long as you’re not doing anything, you can move around freely in a given area, which prevents potential mistakes like over-tapping and the like. Overall, the game feels less complex and more accessible compared to XCOM, which I think is perfect. If you’re looking for something more challenging, Tactica probably isn’t for you, it’s more of a leisurely experience.
On the other hand, I’m not saying that the fights can’t be challenging, as I only managed to complete two in the limited time. However, my impressions of the game were very positive. There may not be many options, but the magic of XCOM-style games is still there, and in short, it’s a very addictive formula that definitely has the classic “one more turn” option. Also, what’s unique here is the ability to perform a kind of super attack. If you place all three of your characters in a triangle with a stunned enemy in the middle, you can perform a very powerful attack that will deal massive damage to everything inside. I’m very interested in this mechanic, and I’m sure there will be many tactics with it.
Speaking of characters, you can of course count on the characters from the original Persona 5, voiced by the same voice actors. If you like the fifth part and the characters here, then you will definitely like the dialogues. Unfortunately, I can’t yet estimate how interesting the story will be, how much dialogue there will be, and whether we should expect any gameplay beyond the battles.
The stylization is probably quite controversial, because although the game looks nice, the characters have a “chibi” appearance, i.e. a small body and a large head. Purely subjectively, I have to say that this is definitely not my cup of coffee, on the other hand, I don’t particularly mind and I think it can be chewed without any problems. I would probably imagine the visuals a little differently, but I don’t see a big problem with this.
And finally, I have to mention the fantastic soundtrack. After all, Persona has always been great, and Tactica is no exception. After just 15 minutes of playing, you want to go and play all the songs right away. In short, you have something to look forward to again.
Persona 5 Tactica is a good mix of XCOM and the popular JRPG series. It is accessible even to complete newcomers to the genre and, of course, is largely aimed at fans of the original Persona 5 thanks to the familiar characters. Personally, I am really looking forward to the game and I am curious to see if I will still have such positive impressions even after playing the entire game. It will be released on November 17 on PC and all consoles.
