If there’s one thing an indie game is guaranteed to pay for, it’s unoriginality, imitation, and lack of originality. Apparently, the developers from the Slow Bros. team. there is no such problem. In a fully loaded demo, they present their epic adventure game Harold Halibut, which impresses with its hand-modeled animated world and unconventional premise.
“Adventure” is a bit of a misnomer, at least for the first hour and a half the demo offers. After all, the authors only define the name as story game. You’ll fulfill your friends’ wishes on what was originally a spaceship and is now underwater, but most of them will be limited to walking back and forth. Also, the title is very talkative, so if the story and narrative don’t excite you, you may need to look elsewhere.
However, this story has an interesting beginning. Slow but interesting. Harold is a laborer in the local “town”, a bit of a janitor, but also an assistant to the chief scientist. In the demo, we mainly use it to solve the problems of the inhabitants of the ship, but several larger lines are also being developed.
What’s most impressive is the visual style. Hand-drawn characters and locations combined with impressive animation will remind you of the high quality of the rendering, such as a number of model animations, although in this case it is mostly wood, so it looks more like Fimfárum. I’ve already really enjoyed the music, which is really hard to describe, but it’s playful and perfectly highlights the atmosphere of a slightly seedy society locked away in the depths.
You’ve probably realized by now that I didn’t find any faults with the demo in terms of what can be seen and heard, other than a small amount of technical loose ends. I want to see and hear more in the full game, which will be released on multiple platforms this year. However, while the developers didn’t promise any puzzles or god forbid action, I would have appreciated it if a pinch of actual gameplay was added over time. Even after an hour and a half, I was a little tired of constantly running for dialogue.
