Gamescom 2023: The Thaumaturge Experience

The Polish studio Fool’s Theory is still a relative newcomer, but it employs many veterans and its launch is very ambitious. Last year it was announced that he would be working on a remake of the first “The Witcher”, but in addition to this, another project is being developed in the offices there – “Thaumaturge”. A turn-based role-playing game set in an alternative Warsaw of the last century. You will take on the role of one of the so-called Thaumaturges – people who are able to perceive and control local monsters or manipulate the thoughts of other people.

A very informative, perhaps hour-long demo was available. This is absolutely necessary for such a complex game, but on the other hand, this is not a very suitable demo for Gamescom, because you can’t devote so much time to everything.

But how does the Thaumaturge play in general? It’s basically an isometric RPG with a lot of detective work, not unlike Disco Elysium. You have to look for evidence, interrogate local residents and track down the perpetrators of crimes, which are in the order of things here. This way you will explore the local streets and interior spaces.

Dialogue and choices are, of course, a key element of the entire game. Your decisions matter, and there are several ways to complete quests, although not all of them need to be available unless, for example, you have a sufficient level of a certain ability. But if all peaceful approaches fail, you still have the option to go to war.

As mentioned here, it’s turn-based, but its concept can be reminiscent of, for example, the turn-based game Othercide, which I highly appreciated. Here, too, there are no classic, predetermined moves, but each of your actions takes a certain amount of time, and the order is determined accordingly. It’s up to you to decide whether you prefer a quick attack with less damage but a near-guaranteed hit, or a more powerful attack that takes longer to set up and can be interrupted by your opponent.

You can also use various buffs and debuffs and, above all, control one of the monsters that you gradually master. They have unique designs and abilities. For example, I played a kind of vampire who could suck out the lives of enemies and give them to the main character. The fights can be quite difficult and require strong tactics, but if you like it, you will definitely enjoy it.

The only part where the game pumps up a bit is the technical processing. It looks nice, but I often encountered various visual glitches or annoying bugs. The developers still have a little time, so we hope that they will be able to fix most of the problems before the release. The rest of the game is really great and is one of this year’s Gamescom hidden gems that you definitely won’t want to miss when it’s released in full. It offers fun gameplay, attractive environments, and a compelling story.

The Miracle Worker will be released in the fourth quarter of this year. For now, it’s only PC-focused.
