Alexey Pajitnov: Meet the winners of the BGS 2023 award
Born in the Soviet Union in 1955, Pajitnov has been fond of puzzles and the board game pentomino since childhood. In his youth, after earning a master’s degree in applied mathematics from the Moscow Aviation Institute, he began working in pioneering areas such as speech recognition and artificial intelligence at the Dorodnitsyn Computing Center. In his spare time, in 1984, it was there that he developed his masterpiece Tetris.

Initially, Pajitnov shared copies of his creation with colleagues on floppy disks. In 1985, the game was released on the IBM PC and quickly spread throughout the Soviet Union. In 1987, it was the turn of Pajitnov’s most famous creation to reach North America and Europe.
