Is Steam Deck compatible with Redfall? Spooky co-op Arkane is out now on PC, but you’re probably wondering if it’ll work on Valve’s portable powerhouse. To help protect your neck wearable from low frame rate crocodiles, we tested to see if you can play Redfall on the Steam Deck without experiencing compatibility issues.
Before playing Arkane FPS on any PC, we recommend that you read the system requirements for Redfall. The spec list should give you an idea of performance, as demanding minimum requirements can lead to portability issues. While a portable device should be able to handle the demands of a shooter, you might want to take a look at our best Steam Deck microSD cards if you’re using the 64GB model, as it’ll take up 100GB of storage space.
Is Steam Deck compatible with Redfall?
Yes, Redfall is compatible with the Steam Deck and is actually listed as verified on the Valve store. A green compatibility check means you don’t have to deal with game-breaking bugs when gaming on the go, but a shiny badge is no guarantee of performance.
To increase the frame rate in Redfall on Steam Deck, you need to spend some time adjusting the settings. For whatever reason, the game defaults to medium settings on the platform, but you should be able to get some frames by turning the images down to low, resetting the resolution to 720p, and enabling AMD FSR upscaling 2.1. Result? Well, the experience isn’t ideal and you’ll have to settle for 40fps if you’re obsessed with gaming on Valve’s handheld.
In order for the bridge display to meet the frame rate expectations above, it’s probably worth setting the refresh rate to 40Hz using the quick settings menu. The change should improve battery life and smooth things out while playing Redfall on the Steam Deck, but it won’t fix the nasty warnings associated with lower settings. To do this, you should wait for future updates that may bring optimization benefits.
Our Redfall review called the vampire slaying sim a “pretty good co-op action game” that’s held back by the looter mechanic. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take part in the multiplayer adventure, as PC Game Pass subscribers can play for free. Even better, if you know how to get Xbox Game Pass on Steam Deck, you can try it out on your portable device using Microsoft’s cloud gaming service.
