world of warcraft could change significantly as the results of an upcoming update to Blizzard’s MMORPG game, combined with derisive comments from a former developer, could hint at big changes to WoW Classic. With The Burning Crusade ending and Wrath of the Lich King Classic moving into phase two, it seems there’s a chance to get the full World of Warcraft Classic Plus.
As a reminder, World of Warcraft Classic allows you to play the game as it was originally released in 2004. The standard version is basically the first version of WoW, without all the zones, customizations, expansions, etc. that have been introduced in the last 19 years. It’s perfect for purists, those of us who like a bit of nostalgia, and players who are new to WoW but also want to dabble in RPG history.
The classics Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King follow in the same vein, serving as the original combined versions of WoW’s first two expansions. There are some additions, quality of life changes, and additional in-game content such as bosses and areas that World of Warcraft Classic players would like to see included, and that brings us to the hypothetical WoW Classic Plus.
Rumored to be something of a balance between the new WoW and the old Blizzard RPG, implementing many features and content from the latest World of Warcraft updates and expansions, but without compromising the classic gameplay, foundation, or art style. . A potentially perfect balance between the different generations of WoW, new discoveries and feedback from previous developers suggest that World of Warcraft Classic Plus is on the way.
Dan “MrGM” Carter, World of Warcraft content creator and Twitch streamer, tweeted about a WoW game code change that potentially points to a new update. In response, Brian Birmingham, a former World of Warcraft Classic lead technical developer who left Blizzard in February, wrote: “I’m a little biased, but I think you’ll like it. An incredible team is working on this.”
Another user replies “Classic+?” which of course stands for Classic Plus. Birmingham responds again: “Of course I can neither confirm nor deny, but I can say that I always liked the idea.”
Birmingham left Blizzard after refusing to implement the studio’s employee evaluation system, which requires managers to assign a certain quota of “needs to improve” employees during each evaluation period, regardless of employee performance. In addition to working on WoW Classic, Birmingham has been a programmer on all WoW expansions, including Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria.
Could WoW Classic Plus finally be released? If this was in development at Blizzard, Birmingham would probably be the person to know and his Answers on Twitter it certainly seems to offer something.
There is another possibility that WoW Classic will get dedicated hardcore servers, allowing full-time play. However, we will have to wait and see.
