Home to Half-Life mods and fan-made creations, as well as custom servers and homebrew games based on Counter-Strike, Portal, Left 4 Dead, and other Valve works, Garry’s Mod plans to ban servers and players that glorify ideals. nazis. Both an FPS game and a builder, Garry’s Mod contains many online RPG communities. But the creator of the same name, Harry Newman, says there’s a problem because “some of these games hide a bunch of guys who really like Nazis” and is running a poll asking fans if those players should be completely prohibited.
Garry’s Mod contains several different RPG servers, including community-made games based on WWII and its history. In many cases, this serves as a traditional parade. However, some Garry’s Mod communities use the game to glorify Nazis, and Newman now says the G-Mod development team is considering a “total ban” on various activities and content.
“The problem for us is that in some of these games there are a lot of guys hiding out who seem to really like Nazis,” says Newman. “Some of them seem to really like the Nazis out of the game. For us, the question arises: ‘How do you keep the good stuff and get rid of the bad?’
“Of course, we don’t want to ban all WWII games, but we do want to get rid of Nazi glorification. Perhaps a total ban on swastikas, heil gilters, and other Nazi symbols is the right solution? Banning symbols and stuff does It may look like they are just using a different symbol, but in my opinion these people are so fragile that a concession would be too much for them and they would look for something else.”
Newman also posts a poll on Twitter, asking his followers for their reactions to the total ban on Nazi game modes in Garry’s Mod. “It might be an obvious question,” Newman writes, “but those Nazi game modes in Garry’s Mod , we should ban them, right? They don’t have any legal reason to exist, right? As of this writing, the poll has received 40,995 votes. 73.1% of respondents voted to ban Nazi game modes, while 26.9% vote they shouldn’t.
“I see merit in games where you play survival and war scenarios,” Newman continues. “It is fascinating, interesting, compelling, [and] educational. The Cons of Humanity will always be a rich reservoir of games, movies, TV, books, and more.
“The vast majority of public relations communities are like that. No more damaging than the Department of Defense [Day of Defeat] or code. In fact, in many ways they are much more interesting. They explore politics, diplomacy, humanity, conflict, [and] it suffers in ways that other types of FPS can’t. We really don’t want to control these games. I don’t want to be told what I can and can’t add to my games, so why should we tell anyone else?”
Newman asks a series of questions about moderating the games and the Garry’s Mod communities in a style that mirrors interviews in a question and answer format. In response to some of these questions, Newman gives a very simple answer.
“‘They [Garry’s Mod players who use the game to celebrate Nazism] Should they be allowed to do what they want? Newman asks. “No.” “Freedom of expression?” Newman poses another hypothetical question, answering again with an emphatic no.
“It is not a loss of freedom. This is not an infringement of your free will. It’s not mind control. It’s not new,” says Newman. “We have already shut down servers, we have blocked questionable activity, and we will continue to do so.”
The creator of Garry’s Mod has also talk that they are willing to work with the respective owners of the servers to avoid resorting to direct bans. “This is really a heads up for server owners,” Newman concludes. “We had this gray area for a while, and now we’re paying more attention to it. How can we work together so it doesn’t become something we should ban?”
Garry’s Mod was originally released in 2006. Its success supported Newman’s own studio Facepunch, which later released the survival game Rust. A pseudo sequel to G-Mod called S&box (similar to a sandbox) based on Valve’s Source 2 engine is currently in development. Check out our full story behind Garry’s Mod.
