American McGee feels his ‘grief and anger’ for missing out on EA Alice sequel

0

Alice Madness Returns creative director American McGee says he feels the same “grief and anger” as many fans of the cult-classic adventure game series after revealing that EA recently dropped a potential sequel to Alice Asylum. This follows the hope of both fans and McGee that a third entry will see the light of day, which no longer appears to be the case.

McGee has already confirmed that EA has removed Alice Asylum, which the publisher called an “essential” part of the library, despite the decision not to fund the third installment. According to McGee, EA also doesn’t want to sell the license, which he says he still sees as an essential part of its “total catalog of games.”

Now, in a follow-up statement, McGee acknowledges how fans of the show feel, but asks them to try to move on, just like him.

“I just want to reiterate that I understand how difficult this is for a lot of you,” McGee wrote on Patreon. “I feel the same pain and anger as many of you. And I realize that in situations like this, we often ask ourselves, “What can we do? or “What could we have done differently?” to change the result. It’s hard to admit now, but eventually we’ll have to admit that this decision and the whole situation is out of our control.

The last game in the series was Alice Madness Returns in 2011, and the Alice Asylum game bible and story plan have since been publicly uploaded, but neither has been made into a full game.

“We don’t give up any more than a man gets hit by a bus,” McGee continues. “We did everything we could as a team and as a group of fans to convince EA to allow this next chapter to happen. EA decided to end the project and the possibility of a future for Alice. This decision is up to them.

“But we can make our own decision, and it is a serious decision, to go ahead. This is what is in our power. And it is often one of the hardest decisions to make in such situations. But that’s what we have to do. Therefore, I would like to ask you to join me in moving forward. If you decide to stay and keep fighting… that’s fine. It’s your decision. I respect that. And I also ask that you respect my decision to move forward. Thank you.”

Alice Madness Returns has already had its own checkered history over the years, as well as being canceled by Alice Asylum, it’s been taken down and replayed multiple times on Steam. You can read McGee’s full statement on Patreon (via Eurogamer).

While the Alice Asylum bible is still online, and you can play the previous two games, American McGee’s Alice and Alice Madness Returns, whenever you want, it looks like the third game will never be released. You might be entertained by our list of the top upcoming PC games.
